Pioneers Suffer 2-1 Defeat In Home Opener Against NCAA Division II Shepherd

Midfielder Jasmine Evans gave Malone an early 1-0 lead, scoring her first goal of the season in the 23rd minute of play.

The Malone University women's soccer team suffered a hard-fought 2-1 loss to NCAA Division II Shepherd (WV) University on Saturday afternoon as the visiting Rams fought back from a 1-0 halftime deficit with a pair of second-half goals. The tough defeat dropped the Pioneers' record to 0-4 on the season. The visiting Rams picked up their second victory of the year, improving to 2-4 overall.

The Pioneers netted the first goal of the game in the 23rd minute as midfielder Jasmine Evans scored from inside the box off a corner kick by forward Susanna Jonkka. Shortly after the start of the second half, Shepherd scored their first goal. Lexi Vondrak's shot deflected off the crossbar and Morgan Gabriel put the ball in past the keeper. The Rams' Kelsey N. Smith then scored the game-winner off a corner kick from Ashley Bryant with just under 17 minutes remaining in the match .

Shepherd held a slight edge over Malone in shots with a 15-14 advantage. Pioneer goalkeeper Angie Nutial tallied six saves while Rams' goalkeeper Tessa Jones tallied eight saves.

Malone will look to bounce back on Wednesday afternoon as the team travels to the University of Charleston (WV) for a 4:00 p.m. match.
