The Malone University women's soccer team suffered a tough 1-0 loss at Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Thursday evening as the host Cougars scored the lone goal of the match with less than 10 minutes remaining in the second half.  The hard-fought defeat dropped the Pioneers' overall record to 0-3 on the season as it marked the third time in three matches that Malone has fallen by the same exact 1-0 final score.  The host Cougars, meanwhile, picked up their second victory of the year, improving to 2-3-1 overall.

Thursday's contest featured a pair of schools that recently departed the American Mideast Conference. Malone is currently transitioning to NCAA Division II membership while MVNU is a first-year member of the NAIA's Mid-Central College Conference.

Midfielder Dayna Setzler netted the game-winning score for the Cougars on a corner kick in the 81st minute of the match. 

Malone's best scoring opportunity came just seven minutes prior to Setzler's goal as a shot from Pioneer forward Jasmine Evans glanced off the crossbar.

MVNU held an 8-2 advantage in total shots on goal in the contest.  Pioneer keeper Angie Nutial tallied seven saves while Cougar netminders Eleni Miller and Lexus Andolino each stopped one shot apiece.

Malone will look to bounce back on Saturday afternoon when the squad hosts its home opener at 3:00 p.m. against Shepherd University (1-3), an NCAA Division II institution located in Shepherdstown, West Virginia.
