Game 2 Box Score
The Malone University baseball team dropped a pair of non-conference home games to NCAA Division III Baldwin-Wallace College on Saturday afternoon, falling 7-0 in the opener and 2-1 in game two. The Pioneers posted a combined total of 11 hits in the two games but managed to bring just one run home following a pair of strong outings by Yellow Jacket starting pitchers Pat Havens and Josh Scott. In all, Malone stranded 17 runners on base over the course of the afternoon while committing a total of seven errors on a cold, blustery day at Thurman Munson Stadium. The Pioneers' record dropped to 19-9 overall following Saturday's losses while Baldwin-Wallace improved to 10-4.
The Yellow Jackets took command of game one after plating five runs in the top of the second. Four of B-W's scores in the inning were unearned due to a crucial dropped fly ball that occurred with two outs and the bases loaded. Two more fielding miscues by the Pioneers allowed the Yellow Jackets to tack on two additional runs in the top of the sixth. Malone put runners on base in every inning but was unable to get on the scoreboard as Havens scattered six hits over the first six innings en route to the shutout win. Left-handed starting pitcher
Alex Haines suffered the loss (3-1) after allowing five runs (one earned) on six hits over the first five innings. Catcher
T.J. Rosenberg and shortstop
Anthony Cono each went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of singles to pace the Pioneer offense.
Baldwin-Wallace took a 2-0 lead in game two after scoring solo runs in the top of the third and top of the sixth innings. Malone catcher
Tyler Adkins cut the lead in half in the bottom of the seventh with a one-out RBI single to centerfield. However, the Pioneers were unable to complete the comeback as, with one out and runners on first and second, Yellow Jacket reliever Jon Tenley retired Malone's next two batters with a strikeout and a groundout to preserve the 2-1 victory. Right-hander
Jared Messer took the loss (2-3) despite allowing just two runs (one earned) on three hits over the first six innings. The Pioneers notched five hits in the game with Adkins and first baseman
Michael Chack each posting two hits in three at-bats.
Malone will look to bounce back on Tuesday afternoon when the squad travels to Canal Park in Akron, Ohio to take on the University of Akron, an NCAA Division I member. The nine-inning contest between the Pioneers and Zips is set to get underway at 3:00 p.m.
