The Malone University baseball team won both games of its non-conference doubleheader with local rival Walsh University on Friday afternoon at Thurman Munson Stadium after receiving two solid outings from starting pitchers Jeff Shenker and Tyler Newhart. Shenker tossed a two-hit shutout to lead the Pioneers to a convincing 9-0 victory in game one. Newhart then gave up just two runs (one earned) over six innings of Malone's 4-2 triumph in the finale. With the doubleheader sweep, the Pioneers improved their overall record to 19-7 while the Cavaliers fell to 11-11.

Shenker had a perfect game going through 4.1 innings of the opener. Walsh managed to break up the no-hitter with a single through the middle of the infield in the fifth. The Cavaliers then put two runners on base in the top of the seventh with another single and a Malone fielding error. However, Walsh was unable to avoid the shutout as Shenker retired the next three batters to pick up his first win of the season (1-1). The senior lefty struck out four and walked just one over his seven innings of work. RBI singles by third baseman Bob Suitca and designated hitter Corey Hartong and a two-run double by catcher T.J. Rosenberg staked Malone to a 4-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning. The Pioneers then added one run in the second and four more scores in the bottom of the sixth to account for the 9-0 final. Suitca led the way at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four RBI's and one run scored. Rosenberg also drove in four runs as he added a two-run single in the sixth to go with his RBI double in the first. Leftfielder Sam Craciun also made an impact, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Walsh took a 2-1 lead in game two after plating a pair of runs in the top of the third. Malone answered back in the bottom of the inning, though, scoring three times to pull ahead 4-2. After a leadoff groundout, five of the next six Pioneer batters recorded singles in the big inning. Hartong tied the game with a single through the left side. Rightfielder Marc Adams put Malone in front with a single to right and centerfielder Allen Strouble then concluded the scoring with another single through the left side of the infield. The Cavaliers loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth, but Newhart induced an inning-ending double play to escape the jam. Right-hander Jesse Coblentz then worked a scoreless top of the seventh to record his fourth save of the season. Newhart improved to 4-0 on the year after scattering seven hits over his six innings pitched. Adams paced the offense by going 2-for-2 with one run scored.

Malone will be back in action on Saturday at Thurman Munson Stadium with a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader against NCAA Division III Baldwin-Wallace College. Saturday's contests were originally scheduled to be played at B-W but were moved to Canton due to the chilly Berea, Ohio weather forecast.
