Game Two Box Score
Following its 20-game trip to Arizona over spring break, the Malone University baseball team returned to action in Ohio on Saturday by hosting a non-conference doubleheader against NCAA Division II Ohio Dominican University at Thurman Munson Stadium. The Pioneers dropped the first game of their home-opener 8-5 after the Panthers scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to rally back from a 5-4 deficit. Malone managed to rebound in game two, though, as right-handed starting pitcher
Tyler Newhart led his squad to a 3-1 victory with his third complete-game outing of the young season. Following Saturday's action, the Pioneers' record moved to 16-6 while Ohio Dominican's overall mark went to 3-7.
Malone plated three runs in the bottom of the third to grab a 3-1 lead in Saturday's opener. Ohio Dominican tied the game with two runs in the top of the fourth and then pulled ahead 4-3 with a two-out RBI double in the top of the fifth. A bases loaded walk and a passed ball allowed the Pioneers to regain the lead in the bottom of the inning but it would not last as a pair of wild pitches, a passed ball, and an error aided ODU's four-run outburst in the seventh. Malone got the bottom of the seventh started with a lead-off double and a walk but ODU retired the next three Pioneer batters to preserve the 8-5 triumph. Leftfielder
Sam Craciun paced the Malone offense by going 3-for-3 with a pair of infield singles and a double. In addition, designated hitter
Corey Hartong, catcher
T.J. Rosenberg and centerfielder
Allen Strouble all went 1-for-3 with one run batted in apiece. Reliever
Jesse Coblentz was saddled with the loss (1-1) after surrendering the tying and go-ahead runs.
The Pioneers plated all of their game two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Hartong brought home the first two tallies with a one-out single. Strouble then completed the Malone scoring later in the inning with a two-out RBI single. This was all the offense Newhart would need as he limited the Panthers to one run on four hits over his seven innings of work. Newhart struck out four and walked just one, improving his record to 3-0 on the season. Shortstop
Anthony Cono posted two of the Pioneers' five hits with lead-off singles in the first and fifth innings.
Malone will be back in action on Monday afternoon when it travels to Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader against the University of Miami-Hamilton.
