Box Score

The Malone University men's basketball, ranked 18th in the most recent NAIA Division II National Poll, suffered a 99-63 American Mideast Conference defeat at Walsh University on Saturday afternoon in the 47th annual Mayors' Cup Game. The Pioneers held a narrow 10-9 lead early in the contest before the No. 1-ranked Cavaliers went on a 24-3 scoring run to break the game open. Walsh headed to the locker room in front 48-24 at halftime and then shot 75% from the field in the second stanza to put the contest away. With the win, the Cavaliers kept their unblemished 2010-2011 record intact, improving to 22-0 overall and 11-0 in the AMC. Malone, meanwhile, dropped to 15-9 overall and 8-4 in the conference following its third straight defeat.

The Pioneers knocked down seven of their 17 (41.2%) three-pointers on the afternoon but struggled from inside the arc and at the foul line, connecting on just 24 of 66 (36.4%) field-goal attempts overall and eight of 17 (47.1%) free throws. The Cavs also labored at the charity stripe, making just 11 of their 24 (45.8%) foul shots. However, the hosts made up for it from the floor, nailing 39 of 57 (68.4%) shots from the field, including 10 of 21 (47.6%) threes. Walsh also held a commanding 46-27 advantage in total rebounds and out-scored Malone by a 32-8 margin in the paint.

Forward Jock Rottman tossed in a team-high 15 points off the bench for Malone. Forward Ebiowei Porbeni followed with 10 points and four rebounds while guards Kyle Higgins and Jordan Lindesmith both chipped in with eight points apiece.

Guard Eric Schiele poured in 27 points off the bench for the Cavs with a near-perfect shooting performance. Schiele buried 11 of his 12 shots on the afternoon, including five of his six attempts from beyond the three-point line. Guard Lamar Skeeter followed with 18 points as five Walsh players reached double figures.

The Pioneers will look to bounce back from the tough defeat on Tuesday night when they host a 7:30 p.m. AMC contest against Cedarville University (12-10 overall, 7-4 AMC). Fans that cannot be in attendance at Osborne Hall can follow the action live on-line with free streaming video and statistics.
