Box Score

The Malone University women's soccer team, led by third-year head coach Leta Gramlich, opened its 2010 campaign on Friday afternoon at home with a 2-1 victory over the University of Saint Francis (IN). Forward Holly Stuchell got the Pioneers on the scoreboard in the 40th minute after tapping in the rebound off a shot by midfielder Katie Heckman. Midfielder Alyssa Foldesy then made it 2-0 midway through the second period after drilling home a free kick from just outside the penalty box. The Cougars cut the deficit in half with just under 10 minutes to play in regulation but were unable to get any closer as Malone went on to record the season-opening victory.

Saint Francis (1-3 overall) outshot the Pioneers by a 12-6 margin over the first 45 minutes before Malone turned the tables in the second stanza, blasting 16 second-half shots compared to just five for the Cougars. Pioneer keeper Angie Nutial made several impressive saves over the course of the game, totaling 13 stops on Saint Francis' 14 shots on goal.

The Pioneers will return to action on Saturday afternoon with a 4:00 p.m. home match against NCAA Division III Saint Vincent (PA) College. The Bearcats enter the match with a 0-1 record after falling at Walsh University on Friday by a 2-1 final.
