The Malone University men's soccer team fell 2-1 at home to Geneva (PA) College on Thursday afternoon in a match that was halted due to lightning and thunder with a little less than 19 minutes remaining in the second half. The contest, which does count because more than 70 minutes were completed, was knotted 1-1 at intermission before Golden Tornado forward Josh Mann netted what turned out to be the game-winning goal on a cross from fellow forward Teddy Kryswiecki just over four minutes into the second period. Despite several strong attacks, the Pioneers were then unable to even things up before a wide band of thunderstorms moved into the area, stopping play less than 90 seconds after the 70-minute mark was reached. The tough defeat in the closely-contested match dropped Malone's record to 2-4-0 on the season while Geneva improved to 3-1-1.
The Golden Tornadoes struck first in Thursday's contest as Geneva defender Chris Morschi tapped in the rebound off a Kryswiecki shot in the 12th minute. Malone midfielder
Kelvin Aquino then evened things up in the 35th minute, scoring his third goal of the season after making a nifty move around a defender along the end line and then firing a shot from a nearly impossible angle that hit just inside the far post and clanged into the net.
The Golden Tornadoes held a slim 9-7 advantage in total shots on goal over the course of the afternoon. Pioneer keeper
Tony Davis made seven saves in the first start of his collegiate career while Geneva keeper Evan Biedenbach stopped six shots.
Malone will continue a string of six straight home matches on Saturday as it opens American Mideast Conference play with a 3:00 p.m. contest against Roberts Wesleyan (NY) College (3-4-0).
