The Malone University women's soccer team fell 2-0 at home Saturday afternoon in an American Mideast Conference match against Mt. Vernon Nazarene University. The Cougars held a 1-0 advantage at intermission before tacking on a second goal just over 11 minutes into the second half. MVNU then made this two-goal advantage stand up the rest of the way en route to its 12th shutout victory of the season. The Pioneers' record fell to 8-8-1 overall and 3-6-1 in the AMC with the defeat while the Cougars' improved to 12-5-0 overall and 6-4-0 in the conference.
Forward Courtney Ricker gave MVNU a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute when her corner kick bounced across the goal line just before Malone keeper
Angie Nutial was able to swat the ball away. Forward Amanda Woods then added the Cougars' final score after receiving a nice through ball from midfielder Sara Buehler.
The Pioneers held an 18-9 advantage in total shots but the squads were even in shots on goal with six apiece. Nutial posted three saves for Malone while Jenessa Loewen stopped all six shots she faced for her 11th shutout of the season.
Postseason Picture: Although the Pioneers did not qualify for the AMC Postseason Tournament, the squad will participate in the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) East Region Tournament sometime in early or mid-November. Participating teams and dates of competition for the event have yet to be determined. The winner of the NCCAA East Region Tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCCAA National Tournament that will be held December 1-4 in Kissimmee, Florida.
