Malone University Athletics

CANTON, Ohio - The Malone University women's soccer team tied with the West Liberty University Hilltoppers 0-0 on a warm Wednesday evening. The Pioneers are now 1-1-1 on the season, while the Hilltoppers move to 0-1-1.
 
The first half started quickly for Malone as Raegan Radel and Jojo Knight both had a shot to score within the first three minutes of the match, but were unsuccessful. Later in the half, West Liberty had a chance for a counterattack at the 11:11 mark, but Pioneer goalkeeper Amelia Henderhan made an amazing save, followed by a team save at 11:16. Both teams ended up walking into halftime with zero goals on the board.
 
Malone ended the first half recording eight shots while the Hilltoppers ended with four. West Liberty brought the aggression in the first half, as they recorded five fouls and one yellow card. The Pioneers were looking to regroup and to continue their offensive pressure in the second half.
 
The second period saw both teams struggle to keep their energy up as the temperature wore down all of the competitors. At the 68th minute, Aubree Mellana had a header off of a corner kick, but just missed top right. The Pioneers had three more chances to win the game late with shots from Alyssa Schofield, Claire Charnock, and Emily Bayles, but all missed the mark prior to the final whistle. Malone ended the night tied 0-0 with West Liberty.
 
The Pioneers finished the night with 38% (5-for-13) of their shots on-goal and tallied eight corners on the night. Malone outshot their opponents 13-6, but each side placed five shots on target. Goalkeeper Henderhan (1-1-1) finished the night with four saves. Henderhan and Mellana were the only players for the Pioneers to stay on the pitch for the full 90.
 
The Malone University women's soccer team will look to bounce back from this tie and prepare themselves for Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play. The Pioneers host the Thomas More University Saints on September 10. Kick-off time is at 4:00 P.M.
