Pioneers Shut Out Daemen for Season-Opening Win

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Malone University women's soccer team kicked off their 2026 season off with a strong 2-0 victory on the road against the Daemen University Wildcats. The Pioneers begin the season 1-0-0 while the Wildcats start 0-1-0 on the year.

Malone began their offensive efforts strong in the first half with nine shots compared to Daemen's two shots. At 18:26 of the first half, Alyssa Schofield scored the Pioneers' first goal on the year off of an assist by Eliza Wills. Malone would take a 1-0 lead over the Wildcats into halftime.

Malone kept their shots accurate after the team recorded 77% (7-for-9) of their shots on-goal. Daemen's defense was on their heels most of the first half as the Pioneers generated five corners. Malone was looking to continue their momentum going into the second half.

The second half was closer than the first but the Pioneers extended their lead to 2-0 at 65:52 from a low goal by Claire Charnock off of a pass by Morgan Kandel. Daemen's offense struggled to find their way on the board in the second half as they went 20% (1-for-5) with their shots on-target. At the final whistle, the Pioneers came out victorious with a 2-0 win over the Wildcats.

Malone's offense was led by Schofield and Charnock as they both had a goal each in tonight's match, followed by Wills and Kandel both with an assist. The Pioneers finished the night with 55% (10-for-18) of their shots on-goal. Pioneer goalkeeper Amelia Henderhan (1-0-0) recorded two saves for the clean sheet. Aubree Mellana, Maya Najjar, and Henderhan were key players on defense as all three played the full 90 minutes.

The Malone University women's soccer team will continue their New York trip, as they travel to Rochester to take on the Robert Wesleyan University Redhawks on Saturday, August 29. Kick-off time is at 1:00 P.M.
