WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Malone University baseball team won against Davis & Elkins College 13-3 at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Saturday morning. The Pioneers are now 10-2 and the Senators fall to 2-11.
Shane Coblentz got the first hit for Malone in the top of the first.
Vincent Alvarez brought him home off a base hit to right field. Davis & Elkins was able to take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first off four hits.
Robert Gumino doubled to start the third inning then
Reilly Tyna singled to plate two runners and tie the score at 3-3. Malone would not allow the Senators to score any more runs remainder of the game.
Gumino hit another double in the top of the sixth to put the team in front 4-3. A single from
Colin Coblentz would bring Gumino home to extend the lead to 5-3. Tyna brought in the sixth run with a sacrifice fly in the top of seventh.
Malone would finish the game with six hits and seven runs in the eighth inning. An error sent Gumino home and
Zach Root brought
Colin Coblentz in to start the inning, 8-3. A passed ball from Davis & Elkins gave the Pioneers another run.
Rafe Bonifay singled to center field to bring in Alvarez and Root, 11-3. A double from
Charlie Roberts scored Bonifay and Gumino had a hit which brought in the Pioneers' final run at 13-3.
Gumino went 4-for-4 at the plate and brought in two runs. Tyna led the team with three RBIs and two hits.
Ashton Snyder (1-0) pitched seven innings for Malone with nine strikeouts. As a team, the Pioneers had 17 hits on the morning compared to the Senators five.
Next, Malone continues play in Winter Haven, Florida with a game against California University of Pennsylvania on Monday, March 9. First pitch will be at 10:00 A.M.
