CANTON, Ohio – The Malone University softball team defeated Ohio Christian University 10-3 and 10-5 in a non-conference doubleheader. The Pioneers are now 18-6 overall and the Trailblazers fall to 1-17 overall.
GAME ONE RECAP:
Malone was able to get hits early on and scored two in the bottom of the first.
Morgan Cantrell singled then stole second followed by a home run from
Mia Rose to bring two in.
Amber Miller had a bunt to start the at-bats for the Pioneers in the bottom of the second.
Alyssa Hochstetler then singled and advanced to put runners on second and third.
Jessie Crookston was out on the play, but earned an RBI to put Malone up 3-0. Another single from Cantrell plated two more to make it 5-0.
The offense continued with a single and stolen base from
Aricka Young in the bottom of the third.
Masyn Baker hit a double to bring Young home then Hochstetler had a single to bring Baker home at 7-0.
In the top of the sixth, Ohio Christian put three runs on the board after back-to-back doubles and two singles to make the score 7-3.
Emma Oshel scored run eight for Malone off a wild pitch and a single from Rose brought in
Trinity Davis and
Emma Reese. To end the game at 10-3, the Oshel snagged a screaming liner at first base for a double play.
Cantrell and Hochstetler were both 2-for-2 at the plate with Cantrell earning two RBIs. Rose went 2-for-3 at the plate earning four RBIs. Rose (10-3) got the win pitching eleven strikeouts in 20 batters.
GAME TWO RECAP:
The Trailblazers started inning one with one run off an RBI double. Malone answered with a Crookston single and steal, then an error scored her to tie the game at 1-1. A double from Miller brought in two more for the Pioneers. To extend their lead,
Ella Marochino would hit a double to make it 4-1.
Hallie Miller hit a single to plate Marochino and Hochstetler at 6-1 to end inning one.
After a triple from
Sidney Conti, she was able to score on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second. With bases loaded, Marochino hit a single up the middle to make the score 9-1. Ohio Christian started the third inning with two singles then a sacrifice fly put the score at 9-2. In the top of the fourth, the Trailblazers continued to catch up after a double made it 9-4. They would hit back-to-back doubles in the top of the sixth to make it 9-5. In the bottom of the sixth, Hochstetler hit a single and Marochino doubled to plate
Caylee Selley for a final of 10-5.
Marochino was 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs. Both
Amber Miller and
Hallie Miller ended with two RBIs. As a team, Malone had a total of 12 hits. Baker (4-2) got the win with five strikeouts in four innings.
Summer McCaw got her third save of the season after pitching the final three innings.
