Timberwolves Defeat Pioneers in Saturday Twinbill

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Malone University baseball team lost both games against Northwood University, 6-1 and 16-6. The Pioneers fall to 16-11 overall and 5-7 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). The Timberwolves are now 9-17 overall and 6-6 in the G-MAC.
 
GAME ONE RECAP:
Colin Coblentz had a single to start the game and made it to third after a walk and wild pitch, but was left there for no runs. A single and double in the bottom of the first gave Northwood their first run. To start the second inning, Ethan Petak hit a triple. Layne Keller brought Petak home off a sacrifice bunt to make it an even 1-1. The Timberwolves attempted to gain a lead in the bottom of the second, but Zach Root and Keller would get the out at home.
 
Northwood gained two runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 3-1 after a sacrifice fly and single. In the bottom of the fifth, the Timberwolves would extend their lead to 5-1 off a homerun which plated two. Shane Coblentz had a base hit in the sixth, but was left on base. To secure a 6-1 final score, Northwood would hit another homerun.
 
Shane Coblentz was 1-for-2 at the plate and Ashton Snyder (1-2) threw five innings for the Pioneers.

GAME TWO RECAP:
To start game two, Root hit a single up the middle then advanced to third off an error by the Timberwolves. This brought Shane Coblentz home for run one of the game. Reilly Tyna was out on the next play, but earned an RBI for a 2-0 score to start the game. In the bottom of the second, Northwood tied the score at 2-2 after a bases loaded single brough two home.
 
The Timberwolves took a strong lead in the third inning after a homerun, triple, and steal made it 6-2. In the bottom of the fourth, Northwood continued to extend their lead after another homerun, two singles, and fielding error to make it 11-2.
 
Colin Coblentz tripled to start the top of the fifth and Shane Coblentz singled to bring him home but three Pioneers were left on base to end the fifth. Charlie Roberts and Robert Gumino led off the sixth inning with back-to-back singles. A sacrifice fly from Shane Coblentz and a single from Root gave Malone two runs, 11-5. Roberts hit another single in the top of the seventh to bring Doran Mast home for an 11-6 score.
 
Northwood would hit another homerun in the bottom of the seventh to bring in three runners at 14-6. A wild pitch gave them run 15 and end the game at seven innings they would hit a single to end it at 16-6.
 
Root went 3-for-4 at the plate, Tyna was 2-for-4, and Roberts 2-for-3. Tyna and Roberts each had one RBI and Shane Coblentz finished with two. Finn Schmitt (2-2) received the loss after he went 2.2 innings.

The Pioneers will host a G-MAC doubleheader against Walsh University on Thursday, April 2. Game times will be at 10:00 A.M. and 1:00 P.M.
