CANTON, Ohio – The Malone University softball team went 2-0 on the day against D'Youville University. The Pioneers won game one 4-1 and game two 4-3, and they now hold a 14-6 overall record. The Saints fall to 10-8.
GAME ONE RECAP:
A triple from
Amber Miller in the bottom of the second gave Malone their first hit of the game. A sacrifice fly hit by
Masyn Baker brought Miller home for the first run. In the top of the third,
Mia Rose struck out the first two batters. D'Youville earned their first run in the top of the fifth inning. The Pioneers would not allow any more runs for the Saints.
Halyn Cawthorne hit a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the fifth where D'Youville made an error to bring in
Aricka Young and make the score 2-0. In the bottom of the sixth, hits from
Jessie Crookston and Miller put them on base. Young would hit a double to center field to extend the Malone lead to 4-1. To secure the win, Rose struck out two batters in the top of the seventh.
Miller was 2-for-3 at the plate and Young led with two RBIs. As a team, the Pioneers ended with six hits compared to the Saints' two. Rose (7-3) pitched seven innings and had eight strikeouts.
GAME TWO RECAP:
Summer McCaw started game two with two strikeouts against D'Youville. In the bottom of the third,
Madi Pukansky singled but was left on base. Both teams struggled to get anyone on base the first few innings. Crookston started the bottom of inning number five with a base hit the stole second. Miller did the same, a single and steal. Pukansky would hit a sacrifice fly to plate Crookston at 1-0. The Saints were able to answer though in the top of the sixth, 1-1.
A hit from
Morgan Cantrell would keep Malone rolling in the sixth inning. Rose doubled to bring Cantrell home and go up 2-1. Again, D'Youville answered with their second run in the top of the seventh and forced extra innings. The Saints got one run on the top of the inning off of an error, but
Sidney Conti and Rose each hit singles to help load the bases. Cantrell scored to make it 3-3 after a fielder's choice play by the Saints. An infield single from Young plated the winning 4-3 run for the Pioneers.
McCaw pitched 6.2 innings with five strikeouts and Rose (8-3) got the win on game two after allowing one hit.
