MIDLAND, Mich. - The Malone University men's lacrosse team lost on the road to the Northwood Timberwolves 18-1. The Pioneers are now 1-9 on the year, while the Timberwolves improve to 5-2. In the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC), Malone falls to 1-4, and Northwood jumps to 3-0.
The Pioneers were held to zero goals in the first quarter, as the Timberwolves took a 4-0 lead to end the period. Malone was outshot by Northwood 21-1 in the first, and struggled with possession with seven turnovers.
The second quarter stayed with the Timberwolves as they held the Pioneers to zero goals again and outshot Malone 21-4. The struggles continued for Malone as they went 0-for-3 on power plays in the second. Malone went into halftime with a 11-0 deficit.
Malone did manage to have 50% (4-for-8) of their shots on cage, but the score remained 16-0 Northwood. The Pioneers still struggled with possession as they recorded eight turnovers in the third.
With 6:39 left in the fourth quarter,
Darek Smith finally got on the board for Malone to make the score 17-1. At the final whistle, the Pioneers were defeated 18-1. Throughout the struggles, Malone did manage to go 83% (5-for-6) on their clears in the fourth.
Smith was the only goal scorer for Malone today with one goal. Goalkeeper
Andy Lopez recorded his ninth start in the crease for the Pioneers and finished with a 36% (4-for-11) save rate.
Zach Johnson (0-3) stepped in for the second half, recording a 50% (11-for-22) save rate between the pipes.
The Malone University men's lacrosse team will be on the road again as they travel to Crestview Hills, Kentucky, to take on the Thomas More University Saints in another Great Midwest Athletic Conference matchup on March 24 at 5:00 P.M.
