CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. - The Malone University men's lacrosse team lost in an overtime thriller to the Thomas More University Saints, 16-15. The Pioneers now stand at 1-10 on the year, while the Saints improve to 4-5. In the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC), Malone falls to 1-5, and Thomas More sits at 2-3.
The first quarter was all Pioneers as they went on a six-goal run to start the game from
Quincy Dumarce, Darek Smith, John Mautz III, Liam Sullivan, and
Cody Borgert. Malone finished the first period going 100% (4-for-4) on their clears. The Pioneers dominated at the faceoff X, winning 71% (5-for-7) at the line.
In the second quarter, Malone extended their lead to 10-3 with
Dominic Robbins and
Dylan Fink adding their names to the board. The Pioneers continued their clearing streak as they went 100% (4-for-4) on the clears again. Malone finished the second period with 75% (6-for-8) of their shots being on the cage.
The third period was solid for the Pioneers as they kept their lead 13-6 with a goal from
Nick Sanderson, and Mautz III recorded a hat trick with 58 seconds remaining in the quarter. Malone finished the period with a 50% (1-for-2) on extra-man opportunities, as well as only having four turnovers in the quarter.
The fourth quarter was when Thomas More made an impressive comeback against the Pioneers and tied the game 15-15. The Pioneers struggled with possession as they recorded six turnovers to end the period. Malone was unable to find a successful possession in overtime, which led to the Saints scoring with four seconds remaining in a sudden victory.
The Pioneers' offense was led by Mautz III (3) and Dumarce (3), as they recorded a hat trick each. They were followed by Smith (2),
Liam Sullivan (2),
Ramsey Burnard (1), Sanderson (1), Robbins (1), Fink (1), and Borgert (1). Malone's defense was led by
Zack Barerra with three caused turnovers, followed by
Jake Nelson (2), and
Adam Rucker (1).
Goalkeeper
Zach Johnson started between the pipes for the Pioneers as he recorded a 70% (7-for-10) save rate.
Andy Lopez (1-7) took over in the second half and recorded a 31% (6-for-19) save rate in the crease.
The Malone University men's lacrosse team will be back in action at Pioneer Park to take on nationally-ranked Seton Hill University in another Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) matchup on April 4 at 12:00 P.M.Â
