CANTON, Ohio – The Malone University baseball team split their games against the University of Findlay on Saturday earning a 9-8 win in game one and a 10-4 loss in game two. The Pioneers are now 11-5 overall and 1-1 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). The Oilers hold a 9-9 record overall and 1-1 in the conference.
GAME ONE RECAP:
Malone was able to get in front early on scoring six runs in the first two innings.
Reilly Tyna hit a single to bring
Shane Coblentz and
Colin Coblentz home for the Pioneers first two runs.
Vincent Alvarez had a base hit to advance Tyna to third then a single from
Rafe Bonifay brought Tyna home to make the score 3-0 in the bottom of the first. In the bottom of the second,
Jake Barker hit a sacrifice fly to bring in the fourth run for Malone.
Zach Root made it home off a hit from Alvaraz and Tyna scored off an error from Findlay.
In the top of the third, the Oilers were able to score two runs and added another in the top of the fourth to make it 6-3. In the top of the fifth, Findlay came within one run after a triple and fielder's choice. The Pioneers answered in the bottom of the fifth however, with hits from
Colin Coblentz and
Shane Coblentz to go up 8-5.
The Oilers made a comeback in the ninth inning to tie the game pushing to extra innings. They hit a double and single to plate three runners at tie the game at 8-8. To end the game in ten innings, Bonifay hit a walk-off single to bring
Justin Fuller home.
Tyna led the team with four hits and two RBIs and Bonifay was close behind with three hits and two RBIs.
Shane Coblentz (3-0) got the win for Malone earning three strikeouts, facing six batters.
GAME TWO RECAP:
The Pioneers again were able to gain a lead early on scoring four runs in the bottom of the second. A two-run double from
Shane Coblentz was the highlight of the frame. The Oilers answered in the top of the third with three runs, 4-3. Findlay then tied it up at 4-4 in the top of the fourth off a sacrifice fly and took the lead in the top of the sixth.
A single and double gave them a 7-4 lead. The Oilers were able to secure a 10-4 in the seventh inning, not allowing Malone any more runs on the game.
Shane Coblentz led the Pioneers in game two with two RBIs.
Aydan Manning (0-1) struck out three after pitching 2.1 innings.
