Game Recap: Baseball |

Oilers Outpace Pioneers

CANTON, Ohio - The Malone University baseball team dropped their first Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) series of the year after two losses on Sunday. The Pioneers (11-7, 1-3 G-MAC) was defeated 7-2 in game one and suffered a 19-6 loss in eight innings in the second game of the day against the University of Findlay (11-9, 3-1 G-MAC).

GAME ONE RECAP:
Colin Coblentz came around to score the first run of the game on a Zach Root RBI single and a wild pitch later in the frame helped get the score to 2-0 Pioneers after one inning. Back-to-back doubles with two outs gave the Oilers one of those runs back in the top of the second. Findlay claimed a 4-2 the lead in the fourth on four hits, the most impactful a two-out two-run double down the left field line.

Starting pitcher Shane Coblentz (3-1) was able to get Malone through five of the seven innings, but exited down by two runs. He gave up seven hits and four runs with two strikeouts. The Oilers added insurance with a three-run homerun off the bullpen, but Gage Faraguna was able to roll a zero in the seventh. Justin Fuller led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to center field, but he could not be brought around in the 7-2 loss.

Fuller was 2-for-3 in the game and had the lone extra-base hit in the contest with a double. Colin Coblentz and Reilly Tyna reached base twice with a single and a walk each. Shane Coblentz was hit by a pitch and drew a walk offensively.

GAME TWO RECAP:
Each side recorded two runs in the first inning. Findlay had three hits and took advantage of an error, but a double play ball from Fuller to Robert Gumino to Jake Barker limited the damage. A single by Root with both Coblentz boys in scoring position evened the tally.

A bases loaded single right back at the pitcher and wonky infield fly allowed the Oilers to plate two more in the second inning. The lead increased to 7-2 in the third, but an error by the Findlay defense allowed the Pioneers to make up ground with one run. A bases loaded walk for the Oilers matched the Malone run, but the Pioneers put up three in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run double from Root and an RBI single by Barker.

8-6 would be as close as Malone would get as Findlay rattled off 11 more runs from innings five through eight. In total for the 19-6 loss, the Oilers swatted 18 hits, eight for extra bases. The starting pitcher Ashton Snyder (1-1) received the loss. The 2-3-4 hitters for the Pioneers in Shane Coblentz, Root and Barker had multiple hits, as well as Fuller once again.

UP NEXT:
Malone travels out-of-state for their next game, a non-conference affair at West Virginia State University. First pitch is set for 2:00 P.M.
