Golden Bears Outslug Pioneers in Spring Break Finale

WINTER PARK, Fla. - On the final day of the Malone University baseball team's spring break trip, the Pioneers were upended by the Concordia University, St. Paul Golden Bears by a score of 16-4. Malone is now 10-4 overall and Concordia, St. Paul is 8-9.

The Golden Bears made the most of their opportunities early and claimed a 7-0 lead by the end of the second inning. A three-run homerun and RBI triple were the main sources of energy for Concordia, St. Paul. A double from Jake Barker and two-run single off the bat of Charlie Roberts got the Pioneers on the board in the top of the fourth.

After a sacrifice fly from the opponents, Malone drew closer at 8-4 with a two-run double by Barker. The bases were loaded for the Pioneer slugger thanks to an infield single by Shane Coblentz, walk by Zach Root and hit by pitch from Vincent Alvarez.

After that, the game fell into the hands of the Golden Bears with a three-spot in the fifth and five more in the sixth. Concordia, St. Paul secured the run-rule victory with a 1-2-3 top of the seventh.

Barker was 2-for-2 with a walk before being removed for defensive replacement Reilly Tyna. Coblentz had multiple hits as well at 2-for-4. It was a communal effort on the hill with no pitcher going more than 1.1 innings. Blake Close (0-1) received credit for the start with Cole Miller and Tate Aljancic going more than one inning each.

Malone will begin Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play with a four-game set versus the University of Findlay Oilers. It begins on Saturday, March 14 at 3:00 P.M.
