FINDLAY, Ohio - The Malone University volleyball team came up short at the University of Findlay on Friday evening, 3-0. The Pioneers fall to 4-18 overall and 2-8 inside the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). The Oilers are now 13-8 and 8-2 in conference play.
Â
Jaymes Gilbert got off to a red-hot start to begin the first set with five of the team's first ten points. Malone jumped out to a 10-6 lead, but seven straight points for Findlay put the home team on top, 18-13. It was a battle, but ultimately it was the Oilers who were victorious 25-21 in set one. Each side had 11 kills, but Findlay hit .189 compared to Malone's .043 in the period.
Â
A 15-8 advantage in kills for the Oilers in set two propelled them to a 25-14 win in the second. Gilbert and
Marissa Smith combined for back-to-back blocks in the midst of a scoring run for the Pioneers, but it was not enough to fuel a comeback after falling behind 17-12. Seven of the final eight points in the set went to Findlay.
Â
Malone took an early lead once again in set three at 9-5 after an ace by
Helaina Edgar. Another scoring run for the Oilers helped to tip the scales in Findlay's favor, but not without a pair of kills by
Audra Brandenburg late in the set. She got the Pioneers close, but the Oilers came away with the sweep after a 25-20 win.
Â
Gilbert (8) and
Kassidy Gorsuch (7) led the way for the offense with Edgar (19) on assists.
Ella Kresak recorded a team-high 16 digs with
Jaclyn Jundzilo behind with eight in just one set. Gilbert was involved in all five blocks with five block assists.
