CANTON, Ohio – The Malone University women's lacrosse team came up short 12-6 against Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) opponent, Thomas More University. The Pioneers (10-5, 3-2 G-MAC) struggled to get started and could not overcome the early deficit the Saints (1-12, 1-3 G-MAC) put on them. Prior to the start of the game, seniors
Seanna McDougall and
Alaina Davis were honored as a part of senior day.
Thomas More netted two goals in the first two minutes and eventually went up 4-1 in the first four minutes of action.
Cam English had the lone goal for Malone in that stretch.
Jorjia Meza found the back of the net twice in the closing minutes of the first period, but the Pioneers trailed 5-3 through 15 minutes.
Unlike the first quarter, both teams lowered the tempo in the second quarter. The teams traded goals, but the first goal of the second came with 1:32 remaining.
Alana Samek countered with 26 seconds to go to go even at 1-1 in the frame.
The third quarter saw the Saints extend their lead to 11-6.
Abbey Burns distributed a pass to
Emma Weintz for her first goal of the day and for Burns, it was her 100th career point.
Lela Plouse was credited with an assist on English's second goal of the game as well in the third quarter.
With victory in sight, Thomas More slowed the pace down yet again in the fourth quarter and the defense shutout Malone in the 12-6 defeat.
The Pioneers were effective on clear attempts at 13-for-14. The teams both took 23 shots in the contest, but the Saints made 12 saves to Malone's six.
Sommer-Jo Grieser (8-5) made five of the team's six saves.
Individually,
Meg Ridgway had five of the ten Pioneer draw controls.
Samantha Williams caused a team-high four turnovers and
Lexi Miller picked up four ground balls to lead the team.
The remaining three regular season contests for Malone are all on the road, beginning with Tiffin University on Thursday, April 10.
