TIFFIN, Ohio – In a challenging road contest, the Malone University women's lacrosse team dropped a Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) game to Tiffin University by a score of 12-7. The Pioneers fall to 10-6 overall and are 3-3 in league play while the Dragons remain ahead of Malone in the conference standings at 8-4 on the season and 4-1 inside G-MAC.
The Pioneers raced ahead to a 2-0 lead when
Abbey Burns found
Cam English and then
Lexi Miller hit the back of the net less than two minutes in. Tiffin would go for four in a row across the remainder of the first period and beginning of the second; however, Malone reclaimed the lead later.
Miller scored the first goal of the second for the Pioneers at the 13:26 mark, and then assisted on two scores by
Cam English to take a 5-4 advantage. Malone was in front for a majority of the second quarter, but back-to-back tallies for the Dragons in the closing minutes gave the home squad a 6-5 lead at halftime.
Tiffin came out strong to begin the second half and wore down the Pioneers in a lopsided 5-1 third period.
Alana Samek scored while up a man as the team's lone score of the period. Burns distributed an assist to English once again in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to ignite a rally in the 12-7 loss.
The Dragons utilized a 25-18 edge in shots to claim the win. The Pioneers were just 12-of-22 on clearance attempts, but won the draw control battle 14-9.
English tied with Miller for the team lead with four points apiece.
Emma Weintz brought in nine of the team's 14 draw controls.
Cambrie Neuenschwander anchored the defense with four caused turnovers.
Regan Blythe secured a team-high five ground balls in the loss. In net,
Sommer-Jo Grieser (8-6) made seven saves.
It is a quick turnaround for Malone as they travel to Ashland University on Saturday, April 12 for a 12:00 P.M. contest.
