ASHLAND, Ohio - The Malone University women's lacrosse team traveled to Ashland, Ohio for a Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) match up with the Ashland University Eagles. The conference-leading Eagles led wire to wire in a dominant affair, winning via a 16-2 final. The defeat drops Malone to 10-7 on the year, 3-4 in G-MAC play.
Ashland got off to a dominant start in the first quarter, taking a 9-0 lead. While the Pioneers fought ferociously, the Eagles won every draw control, out shot Malone 17-1, and they forced eight Pioneer turnovers. Malone did successfully defend a quartet of shots as their defense stayed resilient despite the onslaught.
The Pioneers got on the board in the second quarter as
Abbey Burns scored an unassisted goal, bringing her season total to 40 goals to go along with 25 assists. The Eagles slowed down and scored just two goals in a competitive second quarter, leaving Malone down 11-1 going into the half.
Despite strong half time adjustments, the Pioneers were unable to close the gap. While
Cam English fired home another for the Pioneers and the defense held the Eagles to only five goals in the second half, the mountain was too steep to climb and Malone ultimately fell 16-2.
The Pioneers wrap up regular season play on the road as they head up Cleveland Avenue to take on cross-town rivals, the Walsh University Cavaliers, on Wednesday, April 16th at 4:00 p.m.
