PAINESVILLE, Ohio – For the fifth consecutive game, the Malone University women's lacrosse team came out on top of a game, this time at Lake Erie College by a score of 13-7. The Pioneers have now won double-digit games for the first time in program history and are 10-4 with a 3-1 mark inside the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). The Storm fall to 1-10 and 0-4 in league play.
Malone used a 6-1 scoring difference in the fourth quarter to pull away to the road victory.
Cam English led the way with five goals scored, three of which came in the deciding fourth period.
Abbey Burns and
Emma Weintz had four points apiece. Most team statistics were even or close to, including shots (24-23 Malone), saves (9-8 Lake Erie), turnovers (19-19) and clears (18-for-22).
The two teams traded goals in the first quarter, but a score with less than one minute left by Burns from
Jorjia Meza put the Pioneers in front 3-2 through 15 minutes.
Meg Ridgway and
Lexi Miller added their names to the scoresheet with goals in the second quarter to give Malone a 5-4 lead at halftime.
Penalties allowed for scores on both sides during the third period of play and as the teams took the field for the fourth quarter, Malone held a slim 7-6 advantage. The lopsided fourth began with a score just over 30 seconds in by Weintz while a man up. The defense settled in nicely during the fourth quarter as the Pioneers began to widen the gap.
Burns was credited with three assists during the fourth period and Weintz had three points as well with two goals and one assist. English reclaimed her team lead with her 41st goal of the season in the final minutes of play.
Defensively, Burns and
Regan Blythe caused two turnovers apiece.
Sommer-Jo Grieser (8-4) got the victory in goal with eight saves.
Malone will celebrate their seniors of 2025 in the final home game of the regular season on Saturday, April 5. The Pioneers will do battle with Thomas More University beginning at 1:00 P.M.
