Game Recap: Baseball |

Pioneers Repelled by Findlay

FINDLAY, Ohio - The Malone University baseball team was swept by the University of Findlay with 11-7 and 10-4 losses on Saturday. The Pioneers fall to 10-17 overall and 2-10 inside the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) following the 0-4 weekend. The Oilers are now 14-11 and 7-3 in conference action.

GAME ONE RECAP:
A six-spot in the second inning of game one for Findlay propelled them to victory, but Malone would fight to the final inning in the loss. A wild pitch allowed Eric Baum to score after he reached on a triple in the third.

The Oilers would widen the gap to 10-1 before the offense finally got going for the Pioneers. The first three batters of the sixth reached and Jordan Stevens drove in a run with a single through the left side of the infield. Zach Flohr hit a triple to center to plate two more and Chris Munoz had an RBI on a groundout to cut the Findlay lead to 10-5.

A solo homerun by the Oilers gave the home squad an additional insurance run, but Malone still rattled off two more runs in the last set of at-bats in the seventh. Anthony Ryan hit a sacrifice fly and Jake Barker an infield single to score runs in the 11-7 defeat.

Stevens was the only man with multiple hits in the Pioneer lineup. Finn Schmitt (2-3) received the loss after three innings of work. Mark Bunch retired both of his outs on strikes and was the lone reliever without a run charged to them.

GAME TWO RECAP:
Gino Lazzari scored on a triple by Stevens in the top of the first to give Malone a 1-0 lead in game two. Findlay snatched the lead right back with two runs in the bottom half of the frame. Stevens was once again the man who drove in the game-tying run in the third with his second triple of the game.

From there, the Oilers went on a huge run to put themselves in position for the series sweep. Findlay scored eight unanswered runs from the fourth through seventh innings to make it 10-2. Ethan Petak drove in a run in the eighth with an RBI double and an error allowed a fourth run to score for Malone, but it was not enough in the 10-4 loss.

Four of the team's five hits went for extra bases, highlighted by the two triples from Stevens. Robert Gumino reached base three times, all on walks. Jacob Rollyson (1-3) got the start and the loss on the mound. He and relief pitcher Cooper Davies struck out two.

UP NEXT:
The Pioneers make a return trip to Lake Erie College for a non-conference game on Tuesday, April 1. First pitch is set for 3:00 P.M.
