Game Recap: Baseball |

Pitchers' Duels Fail to Go the Way of the Pioneers

CANTON, Ohio – The Malone University baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader on Thursday to Kentucky Wesleyan College. The Pioneers lost game one 2-1 and game two 4-2 to fall to 10-19 overall and 2-12 inside the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). The Panthers are now 13-15 and 6-6 in league action.

GAME ONE RECAP:
The first of two games was a stalemate until the late innings. Starting pitcher Jackson Phelps was able to work himself out of a bases loaded jam in the second and a double play in the third helped keep the zero on the board.

Kentucky Wesleyan broke the scoreless streak in the seventh with a two-out RBI single to right field. An Eric Baum single followed by walks from Anthony Bartiromo and Gino Lazzari with two outs loaded the bases in the eighth, but the Panthers recorded a key strikeout to remain in front. Kentucky Wesleyan added an unearned insurance run on the ledger of Allen Laytart in the bottom half of the inning.

Down 2-0 in their final turns at-bat, the Pioneers mounted a rally. Jake Barker was hit by a pitch and Zach Flohr followed that up with a double to put the tying run in scoring position with one out. Allen Diaz hit a sacrifice fly to score the lone run of the game for Malone as a caught stealing would end the game at 2-1.

Phelps (3-2) received the loss but had an efficient outing. He allowed just one run over the course of seven innings and struck out six opposing batters. Baum had a multi-hit game for the Pioneers at 2-for-3.

GAME TWO RECAP:
Malone crossed the plate first in game two thanks to an RBI single up the middle by Diaz in the top of the second. A Barker double, Ethan Petak bunt single and a fielder's choice groundball out by Anthony Ryan scored the second run of the game.

On the mound for the Pioneers, Nate Plack (1-2) got the start and held the Panthers hitless until the fifth inning. Five hits in the inning and four in a row with two outs was all Kentucky Wesleyan needed to erase the deficit and claim a 4-2 advantage.

Cooper Davies entered from the Malone bullpen and worked around a lead-off double from the opponents to keep the margin at two. The Pioneers were retired in order in the do-or-die seventh in the loss.
