Pioneers Squash Scots in Home Opener

CANTON, OH - The Malone Univeristy Women's Lacrosse Program opened their 2025 home schedule with an emphatic win over the Edinboro University of Pennsylvania Fighting Scots. Malone moved to 4-3 following their 15-7 victory at King Field.

A quick start was key for the Pioneers as Jorjia Meza scored the games opening goal less than three minutes into the contest. Lexi Miller followed suit just seconds later to quickly double the advantage. The Fighting Scots fought back to cut the deficit in half. Fortunately for Malone, a stifling defense led to goal scoring opportunities for Abbey Burns and Alana Samek to leave the Pioneers up 4-1 after the first quarter.

Malone opened the second quarter with an almost instantaneous goal by Meg Ridgway. Although Edinboro answered back, Emma Weintz scored just before half time to push the lead to 6-2 in favor of Malone. The Pioneers forced seventeen Scot turnovers in the first half, in addition, Sommer-Jo Grieser saved two thirds of the shots she faced as she secured a quartet of saves.

Following some half time adjustments, the Pioneers looked to improve on what had been an early season struggle, a dominant second half. They did just that as Samek, Miller, and Ridgway pocketed a trio of goals within the first five minutes of the third quarter. Ridgway then scored another before Edinboro finally stopped the bleeding with a strike of their own. Cam English decided to join in on the fun and ripped twine for the seventeenth time this season to put the Pioneers up 11-3.

Both teams made a plethora of changes to open the fourth quarter and Olivia Marcantonio still managed to split the Scot defense for her first goal of the contest.  Lela Plouse became the ninth different Pioneer to score shortly after as the scoring was brought to 13-4. While the Scots managed good offense in the final minutes, Samek and English closed things out for Malone who ultimately won 15-7.

It was a total team effort offensively as English, Miller, and Samek each finished with four points. Ridgway and Marcantonio had three a piece. Cambrie Neuenschwander helped anchor the defense with four caused turnovers while Burns and Miller each had two. Grieser saved eight shots across three quarters and Sydney Atkinson saved a pair in the fourth.

The Pioneers stay at home for their last game before opening G-MAC play as they host the West Virginia Wesleyan College Bobcats on Monday, March 17th at 1:00 P.M.
