CANTON, Ohio – The Malone University women's lacrosse team hosted West Virginia Wesleyan College on Monday. The Pioneers conquered the Bobcats by a score of 22-5 to make Malone's record 5-3. West Virginia Wesleyan falls to 1-4.
The Bobcats netted the first goal of the game, but quickly after, the Pioneers would score their first goal of the game from
Abbey Burns with an assist from
Lexi Miller. Two West Virginia Wesleyan turnovers created goal scoring opportunities for Miller and
Alana Samek which made the score 3-1 at 11:29 on the clock. To end the first period, the Pioneers would be up 10-1. Goals came from
Cam English,
Emma Weintz,
Lela Plouse, and Burns.
Goals from Burns, Weintz, and Samek would increase the Malone score. Another Pioneer goal came from
Meg Ridgway after a ground ball pickup from
Sommer-Jo Grieser. A free position shot at 3:38 in the second period would give the Bobcats their second goal of the game.
Olivia Marcantonio would put in a goal with an assist from
Jorjia Meza to end the first half up 15-2.
Malone held West Virginia Wesleyan to zero goals the third quarter to increase their lead. Miller, Ridgway, Burns, and
Adeline Shingleton all contributed to the five goals netted by the Pioneers to end the third period ahead 20-2. Two goals from Burns and English would start the fourth period for Malone and the Bobcats would put in three goals to end the game 22-5.
Leading scorer for the Pioneers was Burns with seven goals. Miller ended the game with six assists and five ground balls.
Sydney Atkinson spent 30 minutes in goal where she had four saves. Grieser picked up the win (4-3) with one save. Malone outshot West Virginia Wesleyan 34-13 and picked up more ground balls 27-15. The Bobcats won in draw controls though, 16-14.
The Pioneers will start Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play Thursday, March 20. They will host University of Findlay at Pioneer Park with a start time 4:00 P.M.
