LITTLE RIVER, S.C. – The Malone University softball team was able to sweep their week in South Carolina with two victories on Thursday. The Pioneers (11-1) used late game heroics to defeat Penn College 5-4 in game one and stomped Penn State Scranton 12-0.
MALONE vs PENN COLLEGE RECAP:
Two hits in the top of the first gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. A Penn College error in the second inning allowed for two unearned runs to score gave the Pioneers their first lead of the day.
Aricka Young and
Amber Miller had RBIs in the inning.
Mia Rose worked around traffic in the fourth, but in the fifth the Wildcats scratched across the game-tying run with a two-out RBI single. The tie game did not last long as Malone plated two more in the fifth.
Faith Yoho had a two-run single with two outs in the inning to reclaim the lead, 4-2.
Penn College responded just as before with two of their own in the top of the sixth. A double and a sacrifice fly knotted the score up at 4-4. Rose and
Sidney Conti made noise in the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back hits to put the Pioneers in position to win up 5-4. Rose slammed the door shut with a 1-2-3 seventh for the win.
Rose (5-1) threw a complete game in the circle with seven strikeouts. She also had a 3-for-4 day at the plate. Miller, Conti and Yoho combined for the other six hits.
MALONE vs PENN STATE SCRANTON RECAP:
Malone overwhelmed the Lions in the first by sending all nine hitters to the plate in a 4-0 frame.
Marlee Pireu,
Gabby Meade,
Jessie Crookston and
Hallie Miller had run-scoring hits for the Pioneers.
The lead doubled in the second inning thanks to two-RBI hits by Crookston and
Zoe Lesch. The duo would strike for three more runs combined in the third inning to take a commanding 11-0 advantage. A bases loaded hit by pitch for Crookston in the fourth gave her five runs batted in in game two to get to the 12-0 final score.
Eight different batters had hits, with Lesch and Crookston in front with three hits each.
Ella Collinsworth had multiple hits as well at 2-for-2.
Allie Weilnau (6-0) did not allow a baserunner in her three innings of work and fanned seven on strikes.
Madi Burkhart and
Sydney Hillyard completed the shutout.
