CANTON, Ohio – The Malone University softball team took the field at home for the first time in the 2025 season on Tuesday afternoon and split a doubleheader with Point Park University. Malone (12-2) dropped game one 4-1 but won game two over Point Park (6-10) with a walk-off double by
Aricka Young 2-1.
GAME ONE RECAP:
Hits were hard to come by on both sides with
Madi Pukansky dropping in the lone single over the first four innings of play. The starting pitcher for Malone
Mia Rose struck out six in the first four innings of play.
Point Park struck out twice but the inning continued on an error. Two hit by pitches loaded the bases for the visitors and they would take advantage of the opportunity with a go-ahead grand slam to make it 4-0.
Amber Miller had a bunt single in the bottom of the sixth, but were unable to build any momentum from the two-out baserunner.
Rose (5-2) helped her own cause in the circle with a solo homerun to lead off the seventh, but nothing more would come for the Malone offense in the game. Rose finished the day with 10 punch outs and all four runs scored by Point Park were unearned.
GAME TWO RECAP:
Miller and
Lacie Quarles led off the bottom of the first with a pair of infield singles, but an untimely double play thwarted the scoring attempt. Starting pitcher
Allie Weilnau was able to keep the ball on the ground effectively in the opening innings.
In the bottom of the fourth, Rose would strike again for another solo homerun to give Malone a 1-0 edge. The lead would hold until the sixth inning when Point Park responded with a run of their own to tie the game. Malone had the go-ahead run 60 feet from home in the sixth, but left her stranded.
Ella Collinsworth put herself on base via a one-out single and stole second to put herself into scoring position. Young made the most of her chance with the game on the line and delivered the walk-off double into left center to give Malone the 2-1 victory.
Miller and Rose were the only two in the lineup with multiple hits, each at 2-for-3. Weilnau (7-0) remains undefeated in the circle after she allowed four hits and one run over 7.0 innings pitched. She had five strikeouts and forced Point Park into ten ground ball outs.
