LITTLE RIVER, S.C. – For the second day in a row, the Malone University softball team posted run-rule shutouts of their opponents during the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. The Pioneers (9-1) have now won seven games in a row thanks to a 10-0 win against Penn State-DuBois (1-2) and an 8-0 triumph over Penn State-Schuylkill (1-2).
MALONE vs PENN STATE-DUBOIS RECAP:
Malone quickly got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. An RBI single by
Marlee Pireu and a two-run double from
Catarena Sommers contributed to the difference in offense. A costly error by the Lions allowed two more to come across for the Pioneers in the second.
In the bottom of the fifth, Malone doubled their lead with five hits and five runs in the frame.
Lacie Quarles led off the inning with a single and
Mia Rose drove her in with a triple. Pireu followed suit with a run-scoring single in her at-bat.
Aricka Young and
Madi Pukansky delivered RBI hits to get to the 10-0 difference.
Rose (4-1) was dominant once again in the circle and surrendered just one hit in the first inning. She struck out nine of the 15 batters she faced in the game.
Sydney Hillyard relieved her in the fifth and slammed the door shut for the team win.
MALONE vs PENN STATE-SCHUYLKILL RECAP:
A bases loaded double by
Gabby Meade helped spark a three-run first inning in game two of the day as well versus Penn State Schuylkill. Meade scored two on the double and an RBI single by
Caylee Selley made it 3-0. Meade added her third RBI in the second inning to go up 4-0.
Hallie Miller gave the Pioneers a 5-0 lead in the third and that deficit would remain until the top of the sixth. Three more runs came across to score for Malone in that inning to reach run-rule territory at 8-0. Meade,
Jesse Crookston and
Zoe Lesch had RBIs for the Pioneers.
Allie Weilnau (5-0) asserted her dominance with five shutout innings where she struck out five and allowed just one hit. She turned the ball over to
Madi Burkhart in the sixth and she locked up the 8-0 win with a zero in the sixth.

Malone concludes their spring break trip in South Carolina with a doubleheader on Thursday, March 13. The Pioneers face Penn College (9:00 A.M.) and Penn State Scranton (11:00 A.M.).
