Charleston Bests Women's Lacrosse

CHARLESTON, W.V. – The Malone University women's lacrosse team played on the road on Tuesday at the University of Charleston. The Pioneers came up short against their opponents from the Mountain East Conference (MEC) by a score of 21-9. Charleston moves to 5-1 overall with the win and Malone drops their third straight game at 3-3.

The Golden Eagles put two on the board quickly, but Cam English took the zero off the score column for the Pioneers with a goal just over two minutes in. Charleston increased the gap to 4-1 before Lexi Miller made the most of a man up opportunity. Three scores for the Golden Eagles in the final four minutes of play made it 7-2 after one quarter.

Malone rattled three of the first four goals in the second quarter. Abbey Burns distributed assists to Alana Samek and English for goals three and four for the Pioneers, while Lela Plouse was the beneficiary of goal five.

The 8-5 game was lopsided from there after Charleston netted ten consecutive goals in the second and third quarters. It was 18-5 before the Pioneers were able to answer offensively. Malone outscored the Golden Eagles 3-2 in the fourth quarter. English and Samek scored while up a man and Alexa Wozniak found the back of the net in the fourth quarter of the 21-9 loss.

The Pioneers were outshot 34-12 in the contest. Malone lost the turnover battle and draw controls by a mark of 18-8. English, Burns and Samek had four points each to pace the offense. Burns and Meg Ridgway had three draw controls each. Emma Weintz caused two turnovers defensively.

In goal, Sommer-Jo Grieser (2-3) made eight saves. Sydney Atkinson played 28 minutes and recorded five saves.
