Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Fuller Nets Two in 3-1 Victory at Northwood

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Malone University men's soccer team traveled to Northwood University on Saturday evening and the Timberwolves 3-1 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) competition. The Pioneers improve to 2-11-3 overall and 2-8-3 in the G-MAC and the Timberwolves fall to 0-11-5 overall and 0-10-3 in conference play.

The first half of the game was filled with action as three goals were scored in the period. The Timberwolves were able to get on the board first in the 15th minute with an interior pass. Shortly after, Malone netted their first goal of the game at the 17-minute mark. Senior forward Jayden Fuller scored his first goal of the season after accepting a pass by freshman Thembani Phoya at the top of the box.

With less than one minute remaining in the first half, Fuller was able to score his second goal of the contest to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead heading into the break. Pressure by the front line forced a Northwood turnover and Fuller dribbled around the final defender and put one passed the opposing goalkeeper to take the lead. At halftime, the Pioneers and Timberwolves were both tied with six shots and four shots on-goal apiece.

In the 63rd minute of the second half, junior midfielder Nate Werthmuller would set up sophomore forward Caleb Redding for a header and the Pioneers third goal of the game. The Pioneer defense held strong from there and prevented a Northwood counterpunch to secure the 3-1 win.

Statistically, Northwood barely outshot the Pioneers 13-12 in the contest and held an 8-1 edge in corner kicks. Despite what the numbers indicated, the Pioneers were able to score on their opportunities when they had them.

Offensively, Malone shared the workload as seven different Pioneers attempted a shot in the contest. To go along with goals by Fuller and Redding, Phoya and Ryan Ziskowski had two shots each. Dylan DiPiero, Ziskowski, Redding and Werthmuller all played 90 minutes in the match. Defensively, the Pioneers split the responsibility in goal between junior goalkeeper Sam Cipriano (2-9-2) and freshman goalkeeper Roman Sigafoos. Cipriano had three saves and Sigafoos one.

The Pioneers look to take their winning momentum on the road into their final match of the 2025 season against their hometown rival Walsh University Cavaliers on Tuesday, November 4 at 7:30 P.M.
