CANTON, Ohio – The Malone University women's soccer team defeated the Walsh University Cavaliers 2-1 during homecoming weekend for the team's third straight victory over their rivals. The Pioneers move to 4-5-2 in the season, while the Cavaliers move to 3-5-3. In the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC), Malone stands at 3-4-1, and Walsh drops to 2-4-2.
The first period started hot as Walsh took five shots during the first 13 minutes, but they were unsuccessful in finding the back of the net.
Gracie Ashton would give the Pioneers the lead 1-0 after
Lexi Bischoff found
Morgan Kandel in the middle of the field and the sophomore played it in to a cutting Ashton for her first goal of the season.
The Cavaliers tried to strike back, but fell victim to a counterattack by
Brynn Mowrer. She was fouled in the box and converted a penalty kick to go up 2-0. Walsh was able to find the back of the net during the 32nd minute of the period to make the score 2-1 at halftime.
Despite holding a lead, Malone was at a 13-5 shot defecit. Goalkeeper
Amelia Henderhan (4-5-2) kept the Pioneers alive by recording five saves in the first period.
During the second half, both teams were unable to find the goal as Walsh finished the second period with 13 shots and Malone only two. Malone's defense was a key part in their success today as Henderhan,
Camryn Emerling,
Hannah Hubbard, and
Aubree Mellana played the full 90 minutes of the match.
The Pioneers look to keep their win streak going as they host the University of Findlay at Pioneer Park for another G-MAC match-up on October 16th. Kickoff is at 6:30 P.M.
