Men's Soccer Earns Tie with Walsh on Senior Day

CANTON, Ohio – The Malone University men's soccer team tied with the Walsh University Cavaliers in a physical thriller on senior day, 2-2. The Pioneers move to 1-8-2 on the season as the Cavaliers move to 2-7-3. Both teams look similar record-wise in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) as Malone stands at 1-5-2 and Walsh drops to 1-4-3.

The first period started in the wrong direction for Malone as Walsh was able to score a goal in the 3rd minute of the match due to a successful penalty kick for the Cavaliers. The Pioneers were able to bounce back as Anthony Birus was able to beat the goalkeeper after a feed from Nate Werthmuller to tie the game 1-1.

The first period ended with Walsh ahead in shots, 12-3. The first half was a suspenseful one, as both rivals were keeping the game physical, leading to many fouls being called on both sides.

The second half was as intense as the first half, as Walsh was able to find the back of the net again during the 51st minute of the match to go up 2-1. Once again, it was Werthmuller to Birus for the game-tying goal, this time off a corner kick in the 82nd minute.

During the 83rd minute, the Cavaliers had a chance to earn a late lead with a penalty kick, but Pioneer goalkeeper Sam Cipriano (1-6-2) was able to make an amazing save to keep the game tied. He was credited with a season-high nine saves. Cipriano, Ryan Ziskowski, Dylan DiPiero, and Caleb Redding were key players for the Pioneers as they stayed on the pitch for the full 90 minutes.

Malone looks to break their tie streak as they host the University of Findlay Oilers on October 14. Kick-off time is at 7:00 P.M.
