Late Game Heroics Salvages Draw for Women's Soccer

EDINBORO, PA. – The 2024 Women's Soccer season kicked off Thursday night in Edinboro, Pennsylvania as the Lady Pioneers took on the Edinboro Fighting Scots.

The Pioneers opened up with an offensively dominant first half but failed to find the back netting. Alyssa Schofield, Alyssa Sibley, and Morgan Ross all had early opportunities at points that were ultimately sent away by Edinboro's defense. Malone continued to dominate the possession but were unable to breakthrough as they out shot the Scots 7-1 over the first 45 minutes but found themselves in a 0-0 deadlock heading into the locker room.

The Scots looked to flip the script in the second half and came out with a fiery possession that brought home the contests first goal. The Pioneers looked to answer and went back on the attack. Schofield and Brynn Mowrer rifled off a pair of shots that were saved by Edinboro.

With the clock winding down in the 73rd minute and the pressure mounting, the Pioneers found their answer. Amelia Henderhan fired a goal kick to midfield that was picked up by Senior Reagan McCourt. McCourt went to work and found Eliza Wills on the far side of the field. Wills struck a pass through a pair of Scot defenders where a cutting Gabrielle McCourt showed off her footwork. After dancing around a pair of defenders, McCourt spotted a wide open Schofield who beat the keeper, scored her first collegiate goal, and put the Pioneers on the board. Despite a few more Pioneer attempts in the waning minutes, the game was ultimately scored a draw via a 1-1 final.

The Lady Pioneers will travel back to Canton as they take on the Wheeling University Cardinals on Wednesday, Septemeber 11th at 6:00 P.M.
