Malone Drops Match with #7 Ashland

CANTON, Ohio – The Malone University women's soccer team lost their first match of the season on Saturday afternoon to nationally-ranked Ashland University by a score of 3-0. The loss drops Malone to 5-1-1 on the season and the team is 3-1-0 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play. #7 Ashland is now 4-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 in league play.

The Eagles struck first off of a corner kick opportunity in the 8th minute to take a 1-0 advantage. Morgan Ross had a pair of chances on net for the Pioneers in the first half, but were unable to find the back of the net on their three first half shots on goal. The best of those tries came from Stephanie Tovar in the 36th minute.

Just before the end of the period, Ashland was able to tack on an additional goal. Once again, a corner kick was the catalyst of the score and the Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the 45th minute. Ashland had an 8-2 edge in corner kicks in the period and had a 7-3 difference in shots.

The second half was all Ashland with a 12-3 difference in shots. The Eagles were able to control possession for most of the frame and tacked on an insurance goal in the 85th minute of play to get to the 3-0 final score.

In goal, Amelia Henderhan (5-1-1) made six saves on the day. Henderhan and Madison Woodward played all 90 minutes. The loss breaks a four-match shutout streak for the defense.

The Pioneers return the trip to Ursuline College on Thursday, October 3 at 3:30 P.M.
