PEPPER PIKE, Ohio – The Malone University women's soccer team traveled north to take on the Ursuline College Arrows for the second time in the last week. After securing a 1-0 win at home, the Arrows were able to nab a 1-0 win in the rematch. The loss drops Malone to 5-2-1 overall and the team is 3-2-0 in league play while Ursuline is now 2-4-2 and 2-3-0 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC).
A fast-paced offensive match saw a 26-17 difference in shots in favor of the Pioneers, with each side putting 11 on-goal. Malone held a 9-5 difference in corner kicks on the day.
Shots came early and often for both sides with a combined 25 attempts in the first half alone. A goal by the Arrows in the 26th minute put the opponents in front, but
Amelia Henderhan (5-2-1) was able to make three saves prior to that and got the help of the post keeping a ball out. The sophomore tallied ten total saves in the match.
That score would remain at halftime and into the second half, but with their backs against the wall, the Pioneers went on the attack in the second stanza.
Brynn Mowrer and
Morgan Ross had early shots on goal and Mowrer would hit the crossbar with an attempt in the 63rd minute.
Stephanie Tovar would try to play hero once again after burying the game-winning goal in the prior meeting between these teams, but her shots were turned away. The game would be on the line in the 86th minute when Malone received a penalty kick, but Ross missed high.
The match would unfortunately be halted and declared official in the final seconds due to a medical emergency to an Ursuline student-athlete. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Ursuline College women's soccer program.
The Pioneers are at home for the 2024 Homecoming and Family Weekend match versus Ohio Dominican University. That match kicks off at 4:00 P.M. immediately following the conclusion of the men's soccer match against Kentucky Wesleyan College at 1:00 P.M.
