CANTON, Ohio -- On Thursday evening the regionally ranked Malone University women's soccer team welcomed the Ursuline College Arrows to King Field. The Pioneers, looking to remain undefeated in conference play and stretch their winning streak to five games, did just that as they secured a 1-0 victory over the Arrows.
The first half was dominated by the Pioneers as they put the pressure on the Arrows early and often. Ursuline answered the call as they saved four first half shots as they continuously shut down the Pioneers. The Malone defense stood tall and managed to only give up two shots in the first forty-five as
Amelia Henderhan began her reign as the G-MAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the week by spurning an Arrow shot and keeping a clean sheet in tact as the first half horn sounded.
The second half continued to see Malone maintain a strong positioning on the Arrow's side of the field as they would go on to fire off a dozen more shots. Ursuline continued to fight as they saved five more shots but unfortunately for them, the Pioneers found their winning moment in the final minutes of the game. In the 84th minute,
Morgan Kandel found an open
Eliza Wills who took the ball up the sideline towards the visitors net. While pushing towards the end line, Wills fired the ball across the box where a streaking
Stephanie Tovar rifled home her first career goal. Tovar's late game strike proved to be the difference as the Pioneers were able to dribble the clock out and move to 3-0 in G-MAC play. Henderhan (5-0-1) continued her domination with a pair of saves and her fourth straight shutout.
The Pioneers will stay at home as they face a tough test on Saturday, September 28th when the #7 Ashland University Eagles travel to Canton. Opening kick is slated for 1:00 P.M.
