Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Defense Stands Tall for Third Straight Pioneer Victory

TIFFIN, Ohio – In the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) opener, the Malone University women's soccer team was able to defeat Tiffin University by a score of 1-0. The Pioneers move to 3-0-1 on the season and begin conference play at 1-0. The Dragons fall to 0-4 and 0-1 inside the league.

An early goal was the difference in the game as Brynn Mowrer netted her third goal of the season in just the fifth minute. Alyssa Schofield served a cross to Mowrer just in front of the net and the junior was able to get her body on it and redirect it into the net to claim a 1-0 advantage.

The final 84 minutes were concentrated on protecting the lead. The defense faced eight shots in the first half alone, with goalkeeper Amelia Henderhan (3-0-1) making saves on three of those looks. Henderhan made two key saves in the tenth minute to keep the zero on the board.

The Dragons nearly put a shot into the back of the net in the 14th minute, but it ricocheted off the upright and stayed outside the scoring area. Reagan McCourt made the opposing defense work just before halftime with a shot on goal, but the attempt was saved.

Henderhan made two more saves within the first 15 minutes of play in the second half but was able to keep Tiffin off the board. Working to counterattack, Schofield, Gabrielle McCourt and Morgan Kandel had shots on target to try to add on, but the Dragons were able to keep the deficit at one going into the homestretch.

In the 87th minute, the Malone defense was able to put a stop to the final offensive attack by the home team and the final whistle sounded to secure the victory. The Dragons outshot the Pioneers 13-10 for the match and took eight corner kicks to Malone's one.

Henderan, Reagan McCourt, Hannah Hubbard and Madison Woodward played the duration of the match and provided sound defense throughout for Head Coach Bailey Shattell.

The road trip continues for the Pioneers at Lake Erie College on Saturday, September 21. Kick-off is set for 1:00 P.M.
