Pioneers Upended by Yellow Jackets in Extra Innings

Canton, OH-- On Wednesday, Malone University's baseball team clashed with West Virginia State at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium. Despite holding a 4-2 lead heading into the sixth inning, the Pioneers fell in extra innings, 5-4.

The Game
West Virginia State got off to a strong start in the top of the first inning, with a two-RBI single highlighting a productive inning that saw the Yellow Jackets take an early 2-0 lead. However, Malone quickly responded in the bottom of the inning, with Jordan Stevens driving in a run to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The game continued to ebb and flow, with both teams trading blows throughout the middle innings. Malone evened the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a sacrifice fly from Charlie Roberts

The Pioneers once again rallied, break the tie and take the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-RBI triple from JC Philippi. Despite this surge, West Virginia State quickly responded in the top of the sixth, tying the game at 4-4 with timely hitting and aggressive baserunning. 

In the top of the ninth inning, the Yellow Jackets posed a threat. Following a hit, they attempted to score by sending the runner home. However, Jordan Stevens executed a brilliant defensive play, delivering a precise throw to home plate, resulting in the runner being tagged out. This pivotal moment kept the game tied at 4-4.

The game remained deadlocked until the top of the tenth inning when West Virginia State capitalized on a scoring opportunity. With a runner placed on second base as per extra innings rules, Mike Huber drew a walk before a sacrifice fly from brought in the go-ahead run, putting the Yellow Jackets ahead, where they won 5-4.

  • JC Philippi was red-hot at the plate, finishing with 3 hits and 2 RBIs. He smacked two doubles and a triple.

What's Next
Malone will be back in action tomorrow and Friday (March 28 and 29) for a four-game series at Ashland. Tomorrow's games are scheduled to start at 1:00 and 4:00 PM.
