Malone Falls to Kentucky Wesleyan in Overtime

CANTON, Ohio. — The Malone University women's basketball team (12-9, 8-5 G-MAC) lost in overtime to Kentucky Wesleyan College (15-4, 10-3 G-MAC) by a score of 72-64 on Saturday, February 3 at Osborne Hall.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 19-11 lead in the first quarter and looked to build on their lead against a very sound Kentucky Wesleyan team. In the second quarter, the Panthers began cutting the deficit and by halftime, the visitors found themselves down by just two at 33-31. The Pioneers shot 50% (7-14) from three-point range in the first half and looked to continue their hot shooting from beyond the arc in the second half. However, the Pioneers shot just 35.71% from the field in the third quarter after shooting 58.33% and 45.45% in the first two quarters, respectively. From beyond the arc, the hosts shot 33.33% in the third quarter and 20% in the final frame. The Panthers, on the other hand, began shooting the ball better than they had in the first half to make the game tight down the stretch.

With just eight seconds remaining and down a point, the Pioneers regained the lead through Erin Kaufman's layup. Kentucky Wesleyan's Shaylee McDonald was then sent to the line after being fouled and made one of her two free throws to knot things up at 59-59. With fractions of a second left, the Pioneers had a chance to win the game with a three ball but the ball hit off the rim and the game went to overtime.

In overtime, the Panthers scored five quick points to take a 64-59 lead. The Pioneers got the game back within two at 66-64 before the Panthers pulled away and won the game 72-64.
