Canton, OH-- On Thursday, the Malone University men's basketball team (10-11, 3-10 G-MAC) embarked on a journey to Painesville to face off against G-MAC rival Lake Erie (6-15, 4-8 G-MAC). Despite a valiant effort, the Pioneers encountered challenges as several key players found themselves in foul trouble throughout the game. Lake Erie capitalized on the opportunity and secured a hard-fought victory with a final score of 71-62.
The Storm came out with an explosive start, surging to a commanding 19-6 lead early on. Fraser LaRoque managed to halt their momentum temporarily with two successful free throws, but Malone struggled with key players getting into foul trouble early in the game.
As the first half progressed, with just over four minutes remaining, the Storm extended their lead to a formidable 31-13. However, the Pioneers displayed resilience, mounting a comeback and trimming the deficit to just 14 points as the halftime buzzer sounded.
Simon Blair kick-started Malone in the second half by scoring the opening points. At the 15:47 mark, an Aaron Badibo layup narrowed the lead to single digits at nine points. Momentum swung further in Malone's favor as consecutive baskets from Carter Piatt and Caleb Conard reduced the deficit to just five.
However, Lake Erie responded decisively, extending their lead and maintaining control for the remainder of the game. Despite the Pioneers' determined effort, Lake Erie held on to secure their sixth win of the season with a final score of 71-62.
