Set One Win Not Enough at Findlay

FINDLAY, Ohio – In Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) action on Friday night, the Malone University volleyball team (5-19, 2-9 G-MAC) fell in four sets to the University of Findlay (16-6, 8-2 G-MAC).

The Pioneers looked strong in set one and pulled off a 26-24 victory. The team had a match-high 16 kills en route to the win. Sophomore Annika Nichols had points on the first two serves of the match, but throughout the set neither team could obtain more than a four-point lead. The Oilers were one point away from taking the first, but sophomore Jaymes Gilbert sparked a three-point swing that also featured an ace and a solo block by sophomore Brianne Salinas.

In the second set, Findlay was able to get back to even with a 25-18 triumph. Freshman Emma Weirich had a pair of kills during a 6-4 start for Malone, however the Oilers would rally for the win behind a .313 hitting percentage.

It would be more of the same for Findlay in the third (25-10) and fourth sets (25-12). The Oilers had a combined 31 kills and six errors over the final two sets while the Pioneers were held to a negative hitting percentage.

Senior Gabby Pelfrey orchestrated the offense with 22 assists and Weirich led the way with nine kills. On defense, senior Macy McCauley dug out 17 opposing attacks and Salinas had a team-high three blocks.

The final road match of the season takes place on Saturday, November 2 when Malone faces Tiffin University (10-11, 4-6 G-MAC). First serve is set for 1:00 P.M.
