ASHLAND, Ohio – On Tuesday evening, the Malone University men's soccer team traveled to Ashland University to compete in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) competition. The Pioneers (4-8-3, 1-8-3 G-MAC) came up short to the Eagles (8-6-1, 7-4-1 G-MAC) by a score of 1-0.
Malone was outshot in the match 18-8, however after a scoreless first half, the difference was 13-1. Ashland put six shots on goal compared to two for the Pioneers and took seven more corner kicks (9-2).
Sophomore goalkeeper
Griffin Owen (1-3-1) made four saves in the first half and finished the match with five. The lone shot of the first 45 minutes for Malone came off the foot of junior
Christian Piccolotto.
Just after halftime, prolific passing by the Eagles led to the first and only goal of the match in the 49th minute. The second half was much different for the Pioneers as they pushed to draw even. Malone attempted seven shots in the second half, with shots on goal by senior
Matthew Garrett and sophomore
Braden Lamb.
A flurry of Malone student-athletes played the entire 90 minutes, including Owen, Lamb, Garrett, Piccolotto, sophomore
Theo Jackson, junior
Fraeday Moo, and sophomore
Nate Werthmuller.
The team is back in action at home against Ohio Dominican University on Saturday, November 2 for Senior Day. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 P.M. with the ceremony to honor the Class of 2025 just before.
