Softball Defeated by Crosstown Rival Walsh

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Malone University softball team made the short trip up Market Avenue to face crosstown and Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) rival Walsh University for a doubleheader on Monday afternoon. 

The Pioneers had a slight lead in game one, before the Cavaliers came back to win game one. Game two belonged to the home team as they scored nine runs on 14 hits.

GAME ONE
Both teams struggled to get their offenses going as it was a three-up, three-down situation for the first two and a half innings. Starting pitcher for the Pioneers was Elizabeth Dyke struck out two Cavalier players in the process.

Walsh struck first in the bottom of the third with a two-run homer. Madi Pukansky would open the inning with a single. Taylor Kern walked and on a wild pitch both runners advanced to put themselves in scoring position. Dyke singled to bring Pukansky in for the Pioneers first score. Malone was able to load the bases before they left all three stranded.

The Pioneers were able to work out of the bottom of the fourth when Walsh got a runner to third base.

In the top of the fifth, the Pioneers were able to capitalize on an error that allowed Amber Burick to reach first as Pukansky doubled and advanced on the throw as Burick crossed the plate. Karlie Duvall's double to left center field to bring Pukansky home and give Malone the slight lead.

The lead was short-lived as the Cavaliers scored two in the bottom of the fifth. Neither team was able to score again as game one concluded with the home team edging out the visitors.

GAME TWO
Malone struck first in game two in the top of the second inning. After getting runners on the corners, Emily Spada doubled and brought Amber Miller home. The Pioneers had the bases loaded with only one out in the inning but failed to score another run.

Walsh had their second home run of the afternoon to bring the score to 3-1 after two innings. The Pioneers opened the fourth inning with a double from Hannah Offenberg. Pukansky reached first on an error by the first baseman, and at the same time it allowed Offenberg to score.

The Cavaliers would really expand their lead in the bottom of the sixth as they pushed their lead to 9-2. Malone was unable to overcome it in the top of the seventh.

THE DETAILS
  • Madi Pukansky had three hits on the afternoon, had two walks, and scored twice. She also drove in two runs.
  • Taylor Kern reached base on walks three times in game one. The Pioneers recorded a total of ten walks in the doubleheader.
  • Hannah Offenberg had two hits and a run in game two. She also recorded a walk in the second game. 
  • The pitching duo of Elizabeth Dyke and Jensen Miller struck out seven Cavaliers and only walked a total of three batters as they each pitched a complete six innings.

WHAT'S NEXT
The Pioneers will close out the regular season with two doubleheaders this weekend.

On Friday, Malone will travel to Ashland University for games starting at 3 and 5pm.

Saturday will see the Pioneers travel to Cedarville University for an afternoon doubleheader at 12 and 2pm.
