Total Team Offensive Effort as Women’s Basketball Wins Ninth Road Game in a Row

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Malone University women's basketball team won their ninth road game in a row on Thursday evening in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) contest against Ohio Dominican University.

It is the Pioneers longest road win streak in the NCAA era of the women's basketball program at Malone.

The Pioneers improve to 18-6 on the season and 10-3 on the road.

THE GAME
The Panthers had the first points of the game on a layup, but Alexis Hutchison responded with a three-pointer off an Emma Kallas offensive rebound. Malone led for the rest of the game. 

Brinn Hunt and Hutchison combined for a 7-3 run to put the Pioneers up by nine with three minutes to go in the first frame.

Hutchison closed out the first quarter with the last three points before the buzzer. She scored 15 of her 24 total points in the opening quarter.


Four Pioneers helped Malone for 11 unanswered points to expand the lead. Brooklyn Troyer and Brinn Hunt had back to back three-pointers to give Malone their first twenty point lead with 3:52 left in the second quarter.

Malone carried a 41-23 advantage into the locker room. Hutchison had 22 points in the first half as she shot 9-10 from the field. Erin Kaufman had five rebounds, all on the defensive side by the break. 

The third quarter was not as strong for the visitors.

The Panthers were able to cut the lead to just four points as they outscored Malone 22-8 in just over the first six minutes of the second half.

Kyli Horn hit from distance to spark a 9-3 run to finish the third quarter, including Nataley Armstrong's shot at the buzzer.


The final quarter quickly swung back to the Pioneers as Armstrong and Kaufman scored the first six points.

It took two more minutes for ODU to respond with a layup.

Kallas and Hunt hit two more three-pointers before the media timeout.


Coming out of the timeout, Malone scored six points to extend the lead back to over twenty.

Anna Krupa closed out the scoring with a three-pointer with 1:18 left and to give the Pioneers their 81-61 victory.


THE DETAILS
  • Alexis Hutchison led all scorers with her 24 points. It's her 28th straight game scoring double-digits, the longest streak by an Pioneer since Malone joined the NCAA.
  • Erin Kaufman scored 11 points, including a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. She also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and had three steals. Emma Kallas also had 6 rebounds. Brinn Hunt contributed 12 points off the bench as she went 3-3 from distance.
  • Every Pioneer scored in the game. The bench contributed 28 points to the cause. As a team, Malone scored 27 points on ODU's 19 turnovers. They also had 12 points in the fastbreak.
  • Malone won their ninth road game in a row, a feat that hasn't been done since Malone moved from NAIA to the NCAA.

WHAT'S NEXT
For the first time in over two weeks, the Pioneers will play in Osborne Hall as they welcome in Cedarville University. Saturday's tip-off will be at 1:00 p.m.
