Pioneers Sweep Doubleheader at West Virginia State on Opening Day

INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- Saturday was Opening Day for the Malone University baseball team. The Pioneers traveled to the 'Mountain State' for a doubleheader with the West Virginia State University Yellow Jackets.

Malone was able to take both games from WVSU to open up the season with a pair of wins.

THE ESSENTIALS
  • Game 1: Malone 3 - West Virginia State 2
  • Game 2: Malone 7 - West Virginia State 3
  • Records: Malone (2-0, 0-0 G-MAC) | West Virginia State (0-2, 0-0 MEC)
  • Location: Institute, West Virginia | Shawnee Sports Complex
GAME ONE
Malone's offense exploded for three runs on four hits in the top of the first inning. Anthony Ryan notched a RBI single, and Jake Aleman laced a two-RBI triple in the inning to help give the Pioneers the 3-0 lead.

That would be all of the run support that Malone's pitching staff needed.

Opening Day starter Mitch Maurer tossed five innings. He struck out eight batters, scattered five hits, and allowed just two earned runs.

Cooper Davies pitched the final two innings. He allowed just one hit, and struck out a pair of batters en route to the save.

GAME TWO
Once again Malone's offense got things going early on. This time it was a RBI from Jeremy Tonelli that gave the Pioneers the 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning.

RBI singles from Aleman and Clayton Criss made it 3-0 Malone in the fourth.

After the Jackets plated their first run of the game in the fourth, the Pioneers came right back with a two-RBI single from Tonelli in the fifth to make it a 5-1 game.

Malone scored a pair of runs each in the fifth and sixth innings. WVSU countered with single runs of their own in those innings.

In the end Danny Miller hurled a scoreless seventh inning to put the finishing touches on the 7-3 win.

DETAILS
  • Sophomore Devin Norton earned the game two win with a line that included five innings pitched and six strikeouts.
  • Six Pioneers had a multi-hit day at the plate, led by three hits from Tyson Gingerich. Gingerich was also a perfect 3-3 on stolen base opportunities.
  • Malone's pitching staff finished with 18 strikeouts on the day.
WHAT'S NEXT
Malone will travel to the Prasco Park complex in Mason, Ohio next week for a four-game series with West Liberty University.

The series features a doubleheader each day on February 24 and 25. First pitch both days is set for 12:00 p.m.
