Lady Pioneers Beat Bryant & Stratton in Overtime

CANTON, Ohio. — The Malone University women's basketball team (6-4, 2-1 G-MAC) defeated Bryant & Stratton College (6-5, 0-0) by a score of 89-77 after overtime on Monday afternoon, December 18 in Osborne Hall.

Both teams were sloppy from the start and the Pioneers struggled to find a foothold in the first quarter. The Bobcats took advantage of some giveaways and helped themselves out by shooting 52.9% from the field in the first quarter and led 19-11 after the first frame. The Pioneers struggled offensively and shot just 21.1% on field goals in the first quarter. The hosts righted themselves in the second quarter as they shot 57.9% and outscored Bryant & Stratton 29-16 to lead 40-35 at the half.

In the second half, the Pioneers took control of the game and led by as much as 13 points towards the end of the third quarter. However, the Bobcats did not give up and clawed their way back into the game by going on a 13-4 run early in the fourth quarter. The Pioneers held a four-point lead with under a minute to play but the Bobcats hit a jumper, got a defensive stop, and scored the game-tying bucket with one second on the clock to force overtime.

The Pioneers came out on fire in the five minutes of OT, outscoring the Bobcats 16-4. Brooklyn Troyer had all of her five points in the game in the extra period of play and Erin Kaufman added four of her own to seal the win for Malone.
